The Issue

I am a student in a Catholic school, and nearly every day, I find comfort in wearing my hood up. Whether it's because I'm cold, feeling down, or battling insecurity about my face, acne, and hair, my hood serves as a shield and sanctuary. It is deeply unfair that I am forced to reveal these insecurities, disrupting my ability to focus and learn.

Catholic schools, esteemed for their nurturing environments, should prioritize student well-being. Allowing students to wear their hoods up is a straightforward, compassionate change that addresses a real issue faced by many students daily. Concerns about dress codes and discipline are understandable, but they should not come at the cost of students' emotional comfort and self-esteem.

Statistics reveal that nearly 1 in 5 students suffer from anxiety or depression, often feeling insecure about their appearance. By permitting hoods to be worn up, schools can offer students a sense of autonomy and security, promoting an atmosphere where learning can flourish without the added pressure of appearance-related distress.

We can implement reasonable guidelines, ensuring hoods are worn during appropriate times such as in halls, outdoor spaces, or within class while maintaining respect for school regulations during formal gatherings and things like the national anthem and prayer. Schools can implement a new set of rules allowing the usage of hoods as long as it doesnt violate the few expectations of respect.

Let's urge Catholic education administrators to embrace this small but impactful change. By signing this petition, you support an inclusive and understanding educational environment. Sign today to help create a supportive school atmosphere for everyone.
