The Issue

I have been diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumor (Atypical, grade II). Over the past few years, I’ve undergone two major brain surgeries and am now facing the prospect of radiation treatments targeting my central nervous system and brain stem. The reality for me, and many others in similar situations, is confronting the daily pain and invasiveness of medical treatments which, though potentially life-extending, offer no cure but rather a prolonged wait for the inevitable.

Living under constant pain, surveillance, and treatment is not the quality of life I once knew, and it’s not the life I wish to endure until my final days. With the prognosis offering, at most, five more years burdened with constant medical intervention and diminishing autonomy, I—like many others in my position—should have the choice to conclude my life peacefully and on my own terms.

Our Governor, alongside policymakers across all states, needs to recognize and respect the autonomy of terminally ill patients. We deserve the right to choose a dignified end to our suffering through physician-assisted death. This concept, legalized in the states of Oregon, Washington, Vermont, and a few others under tightly regulated circumstances, provides those with terminal diagnoses to opt for a peaceful passing rather than prolonged agony.

Studies and statistics show that where right-to-die laws exist, they provide a compassionate option for those who are terminally ill. For instance, in Oregon, where the Death with Dignity Act has been in place since 1997, reports indicate that these laws have been used responsibly and compassionately, with a mere fraction of the state's annual deaths resulting from the law. It reflects the demand for, and the need for, patient autonomy in making such profound decisions.

We need to advocate for change that acknowledges our personal freedom and respects our life choices. Sign this petition to urge state leaders and our Governor to adopt similar legislation across all states. Let's stand together for the compassionate choice of dying with dignity.
