Allow tails and therian gear in school dress code
The Issue
Petition for Amendments to the School Dress Code to Ensure Inclusive Student Expression
We, the undersigned, call upon the school administration to take immediate and meaningful action to ensure that all students are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness regarding personal expression.
Recently, a student, Eve, was instructed to remove her tail despite the fact that it was not disruptive, unsafe, or in violation of any clearly defined hazard-based policy. This incident reflects a broader issue: the current dress code does not adequately account for the needs and identities of alter-human and therian students.
Therian and alter-human identities are legitimate subcultural identities in which individuals connect with non-human creatures on a personal or spiritual level. Accessories such as tails and similar gear serve as important forms of expression, grounding, and identity affirmation. These items do not interfere with learning, do not create distractions, and do not compromise safety when worn responsibly.
It is the responsibility of the school to foster an environment where all students feel safe, supported, and able to express themselves without fear of unnecessary reprimand. The current approach fails to meet that standard.
Therefore, we formally request that the administration:
- Amend the dress code to explicitly permit non-disruptive, non-hazardous accessories such as tails and therian gear.
- Establish clear, consistent guidelines that prevent subjective or arbitrary enforcement against students expressing recognized identities.
- Meet directly with alter-human and therian students, including those affected by recent incidents, to ensure their perspectives are included in policy decisions.
- Implement these changes promptly, with transparency and communication to the student body.
These actions are not optional gestures of goodwill — they are necessary steps toward creating a school environment that respects diversity, protects student rights, and upholds the values of inclusion and equity.
By signing this petition, we affirm that every student deserves the freedom to express their identity without discrimination or unnecessary restriction.
