we are students in Hazleton, PA, and like many others, we believe we should have the opportunity to use the courtyard during our lunch breaks. It would be nice to get some fresh air and be able to refresh before going back to class. This simple change could greatly improve our school day experience.

Research shows that exposure to nature can reduce stress and increase academic performance. According to a study published in Frontiers in Psychology, students who had classes with views of trees performed better on tests than those without such views (Frontiers in Psychology, 2016). By allowing us access to the courtyard during lunchtime, not only would we enjoy our break more but it could also potentially enhance our academic performance.

We are calling on the administration of schools in Hazleton, PA - let's make this positive change for all students' well-being and success. We will be attending the school board meeting when we reach our goal and calling out to teacher advocates that understand why we’re asking for this and why it means so much.
