Allow shirtless climbing at Spire Climbing

The Issue

For many devoted climbers, the freedom to climb without restrictive clothing is a standard practice prevalent in gyms across the country. I have experienced this firsthand at numerous climbing establishments, where the ability to go shirtless during climbs is not only accepted but encouraged for the sake of comfort, self-expression, and performance. Unfortunately, Spire Climbing, located in Bozeman, Montana, stands as an exception, enforcing rules that prohibit shirtless climbing regardless of the time of day or the demographic of the climbers present.

At times when the establishment hosts adult-only hours, it seems reasonable to allow climbers the opportunity to remove their shirts if they so choose. This wouldn't be merely an exercise in personal freedom; it would enhance climbers' comfort and effectiveness by reducing overheating and improving grip.

Moreover, the option to climb shirtless during designated hours would help bridge the gap between hygiene concerns and personal freedoms. Limiting these shirtless hours to times when only adults are present can ensure that Spire addresses concerns about maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere during other, more general public hours.

The advantages are clear, and many climbers, myself included, are keen to see a change in Spire’s policy. Studies have shown that allowing climbers to choose their attire can lead to improved physical performance. By revisiting this rule, Spire has an opportunity to align itself with broader trends in the climbing community while also respecting the preferences of its most dedicated patrons.

In advocating for this policy amendment, we aim to engage in constructive dialogue with Spire Climbing’s management team. The intention is not to disregard the valid concerns regarding hygiene and inclusivity but rather to propose a balanced solution that upholds the climbing community's spirit of individual choice and self-expression.

Join us in rallying for a policy change at Spire Climbing. Let's create a space where climbers of all types feel more comfortable and supported in their pursuits. Please sign this petition to support the proposal for shirtless climbing during adult-only hours at Spire Climbing.
