The issue
Many teenagers around the world enjoy playing Roblox and connecting with their friends through various features, including Voice Chat. However, Roblox’s current age verification system prevents a significant number of these young users from utilizing all the platform's features. Recently, my own frustration with this system has driven me to speak up. Like many others my age, I do not possess a passport, driver's license, or any government-issued ID. This makes it impossible for me to complete the age verification process and gain access to certain features on Roblox, such as Voice Chat, which are otherwise available to my peers who are fortunate enough to have such documentation.
According to a study by the Institute for Social Research, less than 30% of teenagers under 18 have a government-issued ID, while nearly all have school-issued identification cards. This situation leaves countless teens unable to verify their age with the current system. Hence, they miss out on equal social opportunities within the platform, feeling left out simply due to a lack of specific identification that is not a norm for their age group.
In today’s digital age, where so much of teenage socialization occurs online, this barrier is neither fair nor necessary. Roblox is an innovative platform used by millions worldwide, and it should consider a more inclusive approach to age verification — one that reflects its diverse user base. Allowing school IDs as a form of age verification will ensure fair access to Roblox’s full range of features for all its users.

School IDs, often issued by reputable educational institutions, include photos and basic information which can be authenticated.
