Allow residential disability parking for autism spectrum disorder
The Issue
As a parent of a child on the Autism Spectrum, I have faced numerous challenges that many families like mine can relate to. One of the most difficult tasks is transitioning to and from vehicles in high traffic areas. Navigating from home to the car and vice versa can be overwhelming and stressful for individuals with Autism as well as their caregivers. This daily struggle is made even more taxing due to the lack of accessible parking options for those living with intellectual disabilities such as Autism.
Currently, there is no provision for Residential Disability Parking in many areas unless one resides on a Residential Parking Permit street. This gap in the system poses significant challenges for families with autistic children or family members who may experience difficulty transitioning in and out of crowded, busy streets.
Given this reality, it's crucial that municipalities take action to amend the current residential parking policies to include provisions for disability parking based on intellectual disabilities. The transition from the safety of home to a vehicle must be made as seamless and stress-free as possible for individuals on the Autism Spectrum and their families.
One proposed solution is to allow Residential Disability Parking Permits, similar to those issued for physical disabilities, to be available to families of individuals with intellectual disabilities such as Autism. These permits would allow designated parking in front of their homes, ensuring accessibility and reducing the anxiety associated with unpredictable parking situations.
Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that 1 in 54 children in the United States are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is time that our local governments take measurable steps to address the needs of this significant part of our population.
