Allow Remote CGM Monitoring for ALL Children in Williamsville Schools

The Issue

As parents in the Williamsville and KenTon school districts, we are deeply concerned for the safety and well-being of our children who require continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to manage their Type 1 diabetes. Our district's current stance against remote CGM monitoring is not just antiquated, it is dangerous. Most other WNY districts have adopted remote CGM monitoring with great success, ensuring children with diabetes can safely attend school without fear of missed hypoglycemic events, which could have devastating or even deadly consequences.

There is no cost for remote CGM monitoring. It is simply an app on an iPad in the health office, to be monitored at intervals scheduled by the physician, with emergency alarms for times where urgent intervention is needed. It is LESS work for school nurses and teachers (and will alleviate unnecessary phone calls.)

It is perplexing and disappointing that our districts remain obstinate, allowing their attorneys to dictate medical care instead of children’s physicians who have provided clear and concise medical orders indicating the need for remote monitoring. This approach is ignoring the medical expertise and personalized care plans developed by healthcare professionals intimately familiar with each child’s unique needs.

By not utilizing this widely available free technology, Williamsville and KenTon schools risk singling out students with diabetes, making them feel discriminated against and excluded from a truly inclusive educational environment. Every child deserves to feel safe and supported at school, without the added anxiety that comes from a lack of appropriate medical oversight. The emotional and mental well-being of our children is just as vital as their physical health.

Remote CGM makes it easier for school nurses and staff to monitor any critical changes in glucose levels, ensuring timely interventions whenever necessary. We need Superintendent Brown-Hall and Superintendent Cimato to recognize the importance of adopting remote CGM monitoring for ALL students. It’s not just a matter of catching up with other districts, but a crucial step in ensuring the safety and inclusivity of our schools.

Let's come together to ensure our children's health and equality are prioritized. We urge you to sign this petition to demand that the Williamsville and KenTon School Districts changes their stance to allow remote CGM monitoring for all children who need it.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has mandated that remote monitoring of CGM is considered a “reasonable accommodation” through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Here are two of the most recent mandates to schools for violating Federal Law:

UPDATE: KenTon Schools have agreed to utilize remote CGM monitoring!  Please continue to sign and share and show Williamsville schools how important this issue is to the community!

UPDATE 10/3/25: Williamsville continues to deny remote monitoring by school nurses (or nurses aide.) After a meeting, the district suggestion is to download the app on an iPad and have the child carry the iPad around all day and hand it to each teacher. (Instead of leaving the iPad in the health office like every other district currently does.) This would single the child out EVEN more for having a disability and continue to place an unfair burden on teachers.
