The Issue

I have dedicated half a decade to the incredibly rewarding hobby of operating electric RC vehicles. It has fostered friendships, sparked interest among locals, and been an avenue to LEARN. Despite this, in the past year alone, I've been asked to leave five different parks within Lake and Summit Counties simply for operating an electric RC rock crawler.

These regulations against RC vehicles were established long before the advent of electric RCs, and even longer before the innovation of RC rock crawlers. It seems clear that these outdated regulations need revision. In various national parks across the United States, enthusiasts operate under far stricter conditions without incident or disruption. Why should our local parks be any different?

Electric RC vehicles offer a unique and safe outdoor activity that does not harm the environment or disturb wildlife, unlike older combustion engines. Modern RCs produce no emissions and are virtually silent. In addition, RC enthusiasts are often respectful and responsible individuals committed to sharing the beauty and serenity of our parks without causing any damage or disturbance.

Our goal is not to disrupt the tranquility of the parks, but to enjoy a family-friendly outdoor hobby that promotes STEM education, recreation, and deeper appreciation of the land in a modern world where children stay indoors on screens. In my time with the hobby I’ve gained a deep understanding of drivetrains, became an expert at soldering, developed a deeper understanding of electronics, and even taught myself to weld. Let’s work together to get people out of the house, to create a fair and accommodating policy that allows for the responsible use of electric RC vehicles in our local parks. A revised regulation can benefit all park-goers by defining clear guidelines and designated areas for these activities, ensuring that both the enthusiasts and the general public can enjoy our beautiful green spaces together.

Please join me in urging the Lake and Summit County Metro Parks to reconsider their stance on electric RC vehicle use. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a modernized approach that respects both the environments we cherish and the communities we are a part of. Let's pave the way for positive change and keep our parks inclusive for all hobbies.
