Allow private hire taxi drivers to access bus lanes 24 hours a day

Allow private hire taxi drivers to access bus lanes 24 hours a day
The Issue
I am a private hire cab driver working in Leeds, and every day on the job is a constant struggle to avoid bus lane fines. The reality is, my work demands efficiency and timeliness, yet the restrictions imposed on private hire vehicles like mine make it incredibly challenging. In an effort to reach destinations promptly, I often find myself in a position where avoiding a fine means taking unnecessarily long routes that contribute to traffic congestion and increased pollution.
Just like council-owned or run taxis, my role involves picking up customers and transporting them safely and directly to their destination. Despite the similar nature of our work, there is a clear distinction made between vehicles identified as private hire and those operated by the city, with only the latter allowed to use bus lanes. This distinction is unfair, and it's time for a change.
Allowing private hire taxis to use bus lanes 24/7 would not only help us complete our journeys more quickly and efficiently, but it would also reduce mileage, decrease pollution, and potentially alleviate congestion on other roads. According to Leeds transport data, the city's push to reduce emissions and improve traffic flow could benefit significantly from such a measure.
The city would experience shorter journey times for passengers, contributing positively to the overall pace of urban life. Moreover, it would less free private hire taxis from the constant threat of bus lane fines, allowing us to focus on providing excellent service to our community.
It's critical to recognize that private hire drivers play an indispensable role in urban transport ecosystems. Therefore, we deserve recognition and support akin to that given to council-run taxis. By granting access to bus lanes, cities can encourage a fair, efficient, and environmentally conscious transport system for all.
I urge local councils and transport authorities to reconsider the current regulations and work towards inclusive policies that enable all private hire drivers, regardless of their designation, to perform their duties without unnecessary hindrances. Sign this petition to support the right of private hire drivers to use bus lanes across all cities at all times.
