My beloved dogs are my world. They offer comfort, companionship, and joy that is unsurpassable by any human connection. I yearn for the possibilities to take my dogs on holiday overseas with me, to let them share those cherished moments abroad instead of just staying at home. However, the United Kingdom currently forbids pets returning into the country by air unless they travel as cargo. This edict is not only inhumane but also behind the times, considering that many other countries allow pets to travel in the cabin.

For example, the USA allows pets in the cabin if their carriers can fit under the seat, while most European countries have similar regulations (source: The BBC). This restriction is not only affecting me but many other UK pet owners who wish to have their pets with them during flights. According to the Pet Food Manufacturers' Association, 50% of UK households own a pet, which indicates the scales of people required to make such distressing choices (source: The Pet Food Manufacturers' Association Official Report, 2020).

The time has come to revise these archaic travel laws, to put them in line with other developed nations, and to allow our pets to travel in airplane cabins both to and from the UK. This would mean that our furry friends no longer have to face the frightening experience of being consigned to the cargo hold, subject to cold, loud noises, and uncomfortable conditions.
