Allow out-of-town pets to be displayed on Petfinder adoption pages

The Issue

My personal journey with rescue animals has been nothing short of life-changing. Every pet I've had the privilege to call my own has come from a rescue, and the joy they bring into my life is immeasurable. However, I'm deeply concerned about a recent change on Petfinder that has significantly impacted this community.

Petfinder's decision to alter their settings so that out-of-town pets are no longer visible on adoption pages is having devastating effects. Rescues across the country are struggling. Animals that desperately need homes are not being seen by potential adopters simply because they're not local. They linger in crowded shelters or temporary foster homes, unable to find their forever families. This change is more than a minor inconvenience—it's a matter of life and death. Many rescues are now unable to accept more animals due to overcrowding, putting innocent lives at risk.

Consider the ramifications: North Shore Animal League America, one of the world's largest no-kill rescue organizations, reports that over 20% of their adoptions were facilitated by connecting adopters with out-of-town pets. Restricting this visibility is cutting off a significant avenue for adoptions. Similarly, the ASPCA highlights that up to 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters annually—connecting these pets to broader audiences is critical to reducing these staggering numbers.

In addition, Petfinder's own mission speaks to the heart of this issue—"striving to end euthanasia of adoptable pets". By denying a wide audience access to see these pets, Petfinder is, in a way, contradicting its core values. Each animal deserves the chance to find a home, regardless of geographical boundaries.

There is a straightforward solution: Petfinder needs to revert their settings and allow out-of-town pets to be visible on their platform once more. By doing so, they can vastly amplify the adoption rate and help countless animals find loving homes.

Please join me in urging Petfinder to make this vital change. Sign this petition and help us ensure that no adoptable pet is hidden from view. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these animals and the families waiting to welcome them.
