The Issue

As a parent, I know firsthand the struggles families face when it comes to planning family holidays. The option of taking children out of school during term time is often met with penalties or fines. On the other hand, booking holidays during designated school breaks, such as half term periods, results in exorbitant prices that many families simply cannot afford. It’s a difficult scenario with only one outcome: families being deprived of the quality time they deserve together.

Families are the cornerstone of our society, and spending quality time together is fundamental to building strong familial bonds and nurturing well-rounded children. The current system punishes parents for seeking to maximize family time, effectively pricing lower and middle-income families out of opportunities for memorable family experiences.

The impact of travel and exposure to new cultures far outweighs the potential minimal disruption to a child’s education. For many children, these experiences are not just educational but transformational, broadening their understanding of the world and enriching their academic lives with real-world experiences.

We propose a solution that accommodates the needs of both the educational system and families: Allowing one week of term time holiday per academic year for every child without penalties. This change would offer families flexibility, help alleviate financial pressures, and promote inclusivity, allowing all children, regardless of their family's financial situation, access to travel and cultural exposure.

Let’s prioritize family and educational benefits over rigid regulations and financial penalties. Sign this petition to allow one week of term time holiday per child, and let’s work together towards a balanced approach that ensures the well-being and growth of our children and families.
