Each year, the Northshore School District attracts a wealth of aspiring tennis players, with around 80-90 students eagerly trying out to secure their place on the team. This sporting opportunity isn't just about picking up a racket; it brings together students from different backgrounds, boosts physical health, and instills invaluable life skills such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Yet, due to budget constraints, only a smaller roster of approximately 50 players is being accepted this season, cutting off access to a program that could be transformative for many.

In previous seasons, the team size was limited to 75 players. However, the increased interest and participation rate are clear indicators that the tennis program has significant positive effects on student engagement. Reducing the numbers limits these opportunities and denies many students the chance for personal and athletic growth. The absence of a third coach due to funding policies has forced the district to cut down on team members, which is not only disappointing but also restricts students' potential for development.

Data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association consistently shows that students who participate in sports like tennis are more likely to achieve academic success, have better attendance, and develop leadership skills that benefit them throughout their lives. Additionally, tennis is a lifelong sport; starting young fosters a lifelong habit of staying active and healthy.

The obvious solution to this bottleneck is to fund a third tennis coach. By doing so, the Northshore School District can accommodate more eager student-athletes. With an additional coach, we can restore the team size to its previous levels, or even expand it, thereby providing more students with the opportunity to play, learn, and grow. This investment in a third coach not only benefits the students but also strengthens the school’s sporting reputation, fostering community pride and engagement.

We urge the Northshore School District to recognize the importance of this program and prioritize the hiring of a third coach. By securing the necessary funding, we can ensure that all students interested in playing tennis have the chance to do so.
