The Issue
According to the Broken Arrow Code of Ordinances(Appendix A, Ch. 10, Sec 9-b.v), "Drive-through windows and drive-through lanes are prohibited for Marijuan Dispensaries".
It is with a profound understanding of our local industry that I draft this petition. For the past five years, I have been a dedicated worker within the medical marijuana industry in Oklahoma. I have witnessed firsthand how our industry remains under harsh scrutiny and frequently faces hurdles that do not beset other businesses - arbitrary restrictions, such as the prohibition on using drive-thru windows at dispensaries, being the foremost of them.
The medical marijuana industry is unique in its duty of serving those impacted by various health conditions. Our patients range from those with minor ailments to those with severe disabilities that limit their mobility. For these patients, especially, the drive-thru service can be a crucial lifeline - a means to access the medically necessary marijuana without the challenges of getting out of their vehicle.
Despite the burgeoning acceptance of medical marijuana nationwide, the industry still faces an unwarranted stigma that contributes to these burdensome restrictions. Notwithstanding these hurdles, we strive to deliver our services with as much professionalism and compliance as any other healthcare facility.
Moreover, unlike other American businesses, the medical marijuana industry does not benefit from tax breaks usually granted. This added financial strain is making survival increasingly difficult for us, limiting our ability to provide the level of care our patients deserve.
With over 320,000 medical marijuana patients in Oklahoma as of 2021 (Oklahomans for Health), the need for easy access to these services cannot be disputed. Let us serve our community better. Please join me in urging the city authorities to permit the usage of existing drive-thru windows at medical marijuana dispensaries in Broken Arrow.
