The Issue

In my school experience, I've found myself struggling to keep up with assignments and coursework due to the impact of menstrual symptoms. It's distressing to see my missing assignments pile up just because I had to take a day off for mild cramps, which are a reality for many of us during that time of the month.

Menstrual health is a significant issue that affects countless students. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, up to 80% of people with periods experience menstrual symptoms, which can range from slight discomfort to severe pain and fatigue. These symptoms can greatly interfere with a student's ability to concentrate, participate in class, or even attend school.

Currently, students like myself are often forced to choose between our health and our education, which shouldn't be the case. It's important to advocate for a policy that acknowledges the necessity of excused menstrual wellness days. Allowing up to five excused days per academic year for menstrual wellness would acknowledge the genuine effects of menstruation on young learners and ensure that students can prioritize their health without the added stress of academic penalties.

This change is not only about recognizing the challenges faced by menstruating students but also about fostering an environment where mental and physical health is valued. California, for example, has been a leader in passing progressive policies to support student well-being, and this would be a complementary addition to those pursuits.

I urge school administrators and policymakers to consider implementing this policy. The goal is to provide a supportive framework where students can manage their health needs and still achieve academic success. By signing this petition, you're supporting a more compassionate and understanding educational system. Let's work together to make our schools more inclusive and understanding of all students' needs. Please sign this petition to help make excused menstrual wellness days a reality.
