Allow MEHKOs in Merced County

The Issue

Merced County, a vibrant and diverse community rich in culinary traditions, currently does not permit Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKOs). This prohibition severely impacts numerous home-based food entrepreneurs, denying them the opportunity to legally pursue their passion, provide for their families, and contribute to our local economy.

MEHKOs are legal food businesses operated from the entrepreneur's home kitchen. They are an innovative and flexible solution for small-scale culinary entrepreneurs, providing an entry point into the food industry without the steep costs associated with traditional brick-and-mortar establishments. Many neighboring counties in California have successfully adopted MEHKO ordinances, demonstrating the viability and safety of these operations.

By adopting a MEHKO ordinance, Merced County would empower local residents to engage in lawful, regulated cooking and selling of meals from their homes, ensuring compliance with state-level health and safety standards. This step not only provides a crucial income avenue for families but also enriches our cultural landscape with diverse, home-cooked culinary options.

Facts to support this initiative include the success stories from counties like Riverside and Santa Barbara, where MEHKOs have been shown to boost local economies while maintaining stringent health and safety records. Implementing a similar ordinance in Merced County would open doors for our community's aspiring cooks and food enthusiasts, fostering entrepreneurship and preserving our unique local flavors.

We urge the Merced County Board of Supervisors to explore this opportunity to modernize our local food regulations by implementing a MEHKO ordinance. Let's support our home cooks and nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of Merced County by legalizing and regulating MEHKOs.

Thank you for reaching out and for providing the opportunity to respond to those who have signed the petition regarding Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKOs) in Merced County. I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to share their perspective on this issue. I strongly support local entrepreneurs, small businesses, and creating opportunities for residents to pursue their dreams while strengthening our local economy. At the same time, as a Merced County Supervisor, I have a responsibility to ensure that any ordinance adopted by the County adequately protects the health, safety, and well-being of the public. Food preparation and service involve important public health considerations, including food handling, sanitation, inspections, consumer protections, and enforcement standards. Any local program must provide confidence that these safeguards are in place while also being practical and fair for those operating a home-based business. If the Board of Supervisors considers a MEHKO ordinance, I will carefully review the recommendations of our Environmental Health Division, Public Health Department, County Counsel, and other stakeholders to ensure any proposal complies with state law and includes appropriate health and safety standards. I remain committed to listening to residents, business owners, and public health professionals before making a decision. My goal is to support innovation and economic opportunity while ensuring that the health and safety of Merced County families remain the highest priority. Thank you again to everyone who has participated in this conversation and for your continued engagement in our community. Sincerely, Daron Daron McDaniel Merced County Board of Supervisors Representing District 3 [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters.
