The Issue

I have a personal stake in this cause. My brother and husband are both incarcerated in the TDCJ system, and it pains me to think of the lack of warmth and care they can experience behind the bars. A meal is more than just food; it is a way for us to express our love and provide a sense of normalcy, no matter how short the time. Every time I visit them, I wish I could share a home-cooked meal, something that can remind them of the love waiting outside these walls.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) currently has a policy that does not allow outside meals during visitation. This policy is depriving inmates of an incredible opportunity to connect with their families in a deeply human way. Sharing a meal is one of the most important ways of bonding; it forms communication and reinforces familial ties, which are crucial for the emotional and psychological well-being of both inmates and their loved ones.

Research indicates that inmates who maintain strong family connections are less likely to re-offend after release. According to the National Institute of Justice, maintaining family bonds can reduce recidivism by up to 13%. Allowing meals during visitation can, therefore, play a role in reducing crime and promoting rehabilitation. Furthermore, states like Ohio and California have implemented similar policies with significant success, showing it's not only feasible but beneficial.

Our request is simple and actionable. We urge TDCJ to permit family members to bring in meals during visitations. This can be achieved by implementing procedures where meals are checked at the entrance for security purposes. Moreover, there could be designated areas for these meals to be consumed, ensuring order and safety.

TDCJ has the power to make a significant impact: let us show our loved ones that they are not alone, that they are still a part of a family that cares for them deeply. This small gesture can make a big difference in their lives and ours.

Please join me in urging TDCJ to reevaluate their policy and allow meals during visitations as a step towards more humane and supportive incarceration conditions. Sign this petition to bring families closer together, even in the toughest of times. One meal at a time.
