The Issue

As a student in the city of Bellevue, I've seen the pressures of academic life firsthand. We are encouraged to dedicate all our time to studies and extracurricular activities that supposedly enhance our academic profiles. While I understand the importance of education, the current policies in the BSD, LWSD, and others seem to miss the mark when it comes to understanding the need for a balanced school life. One of the biggest concerns I have is the restriction on playing games during our free time.

The school district's policies go too far and feel overly strict, leaving little room for students to relax and de-stress during breaks. Free time is exactly that—free. It should be a chance for students to do something enjoyable, rejuvenating, and different from their everyday studies. Playing games, whether digital or traditional, has been shown to reduce stress, improve cognitive functioning, and foster important social connections, which are all crucial for a well-rounded education.

According to research from reputable institutions like the American Psychological Association and the Entertainment Software Association, playing games can do more than just offer a momentary escape—they help build vital skills such as problem-solving, strategic thinking, and teamwork. Moreover, allowing games during free time could balance the stress of academic life in a healthy, constructive way.

We propose a practical solution: these schools should revise its current free time policy to permit gaming activities in designated areas or times. Providing this option will not only keep gaming regulated and appropriate within the school environment but also recognize and honor the need for balance.

Sign this petition to urge all schools in Bellevue to reconsider its stance on games during free time. Let’s champion a change that acknowledges the diverse interests of students, nurtures well-being, and promotes a more positive and productive school experience for everyone.
