Allow front window tint of at least 35% in Iowa

Allow front window tint of at least 35% in Iowa
The Issue
Iowa enacted 321.438 in 1983 limiting window tint of the front windshield and front driver and passenger side windows to a transparency of 70% or more.
Furthermore, in 2012 revoked the application and use of a medical exemption allowing citizens with medical conditions to have darker window tint.
In 2018 the Iowa Senate passed a bill lowering the required VLT to 35% on front side windows but it doesn't seem to have went anywhere since.
Window tint technology has come a long way since 1983. It is not only used to increase the style of a vehicle but also;
- Blocks heat from entering the vehicle
- Blocks UV rays from damaging the interior
- Reduces sun glare, making it safer to drive during the day
- Reduces the glare from headlights at night
- Makes vehicles safer by holding the glass together in the event of an accident
- Reduces the chance of vehicle theft by hiding valuables
The state says the reduced tint law is for law enforcement safety, so law enforcement can see inside the vehicle during a traffic stop. How does this law protect law enforcement if they approach the vehicle from the rear? If you want to protect LEOs and allow darker tint pass a bill to make citizens involved in a traffic stop to roll their windows down for an approaching officer.
Another reason the state requires higher transparency is because of a study done in 2000 that shows drivers with window tint had a lower reaction time with window tint because of the lower ability to see through the tinted glass. Huge advancements to window tint technology since 2000 has made window tint easier to see through with a much higher optical clarity when using higher grade window film.
I am writing this petition to the governor and legislative offices of Iowa to allow window tinting of vehicles front side windows to at least 35% VLT to align with surrounding states tint laws. Window tint use should not be looked down on but encouraged as it provides benefits beyond just having dark windows and creates an overall safer and more comfortable driving experience.
Please sign the petition and share with your friends that would love to enjoy the benefits of window tint without having to worry about getting stopped or having their vehicle registration suspended just for having window tint.
