Allow Freshmen to Join Fraternities and Sororities

Allow Freshmen to Join Fraternities and Sororities
The Issue
As a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, my journey was significantly impacted by the restrictions in the Livingstone College student handbook that prevented me from joining until my sophomore year. This delay in participation denied me valuable opportunities to establish connections and support networks during my freshman year.
Greek life offers unique platforms for students to engage with their peers, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Freshmen must be granted this opportunity once they have completed 12 credit hours or after their second semester. The minimum GPA required for membership should be between 2.8–3.0.
Research shows that students involved in Greek life often report higher levels of satisfaction with their college experience (Pike, G., & Askew, J., Journal of Higher Education). By allowing freshmen to join fraternities or sororities earlier, we can enhance their overall academic experience and contribute positively towards their personal growth. As well as improve the number of students who want to come to our institution.
We urge Livingstone College administration in Salisbury, NC to reconsider its current policies regarding fraternity and sorority membership eligibility for freshmen students who have completed 12 credit hours with a GPA between 2.8–3.0.
Please sign this petition if you believe in providing all students an equal opportunity to participate fully in Greek life from the beginning of their college journey.
