Bring Family Pets Back to Roman Park – Restore Inclusion, Compassion, and Community in Credenhill
There is something deeply painful about being made to feel unwelcome in your own community.
Recently, while simply walking my beloved dog in Credenhill, Hereford, I was confronted by a member of the Parish Council and left feeling humiliated as though I had no right to enjoy the very green spaces that belong to all of us. Sadly, this was not an isolated experience. Many responsible pet owners are being made to feel excluded, judged, and pushed aside.
For many residents, especially those with limited mobility, disabilities, or mental health struggles, Roman Park is the only accessible green space available. Much of Credenhill is surrounded by roads and built-up areas that are unsuitable for peaceful walks or outdoor recreation with pets. Asking elderly or disabled residents to travel long distances just to safely walk their companions is not fair, inclusive, or compassionate.
Our dogs are not just animals they are family, emotional support, companionship, and comfort. For some people, they are the reason they leave the house each day.
We fully understand the importance of keeping playgrounds clean and safe for children. In fact, Parish Council member who i wont name for legal reasons previously suggested a sensible and balanced solution: fencing around play areas, allowing children and responsible dog owners to safely share Roman Park together. This practical compromise would create harmony rather than division within our community.
The main argument used to justify banning dogs from the park is the fear of toxoplasmosis. However, evidence shows that the risk in maintained public parks is extremely low, particularly when responsible pet owners clean up after their animals which the overwhelming majority already do. dogs are also vaccinated to decrease the risk of toxoplasmosis. it also becomes contradictive when they cant stop wild animals that actually have a high risk of toxoplasmosis entering the field day and night.
Public green spaces exist to support wellbeing, connection, exercise, and community spirit. Preventing responsible dog owners and those who rely on support dogs from accessing Roman Park only increases isolation and exclusion. A welcoming community should make room for everyone including families with pets.
We are not asking for special treatment. We are simply asking to be treated with kindness, fairness, and respect.
Please sign this petition to urge Credenhill Parish Council to reconsider the current restrictions and allow family pets back into Roman Park. Together, we can create a more compassionate, inclusive, and united community for everyone.
