Allow Exclusive Use Of Disabled Bay Outside Someone’s Home

The Issue

As someone with progressive reduced physical mobility, I needed a parking solution that would accommodate my situation. I made the decision to apply for a disabled bay right outside my home, as parking is extremely limited due to many homes having multiple car owners, which often forced me to park several streets away. This exacerbated my condition and posed numerous physical limitations. I made application and was granted an 'Advisory' disabled bay directly outside my house.

However, this ‘Advisory’ designation means the bay is open to any Blue Badge holder, thereby failing to alleviate my initial concern and appears unjust as other badge holders already have lesser parking restrictions.  This predicament is not unique. The lack of specific legislation to protect these bays for their applicants leads to misuse and inefficiency of the current system.

In other European countries they are empathetic and positively acknowledge the need of the disabled person to have a sole use, designated space outside their home, simply by placing a sign with the applicants car registration.  This system could be made simpler and more cost effective by only having a part of the applicants Blue Badge number displayed on the sign.

It's paramount that policy changes are implemented to acknowledge the specific parking needs of individuals and ensure the purpose of these bays are respected.

We need a systematic change to mandate that disabled bays, once assigned outside personal residences, should be protected for the exclusive use of the applicant.  This will provide a greater sense of independence and confirm their right to parking convenience outside their own home. By implementing this change, we can foster a more inclusive and fair society for disabled individuals.

Join me in urging our lawmakers to see the necessity of this change and update the current regulations. Sign the petition today and make our voices heard. Your support will better the lives of millions of Blue Badge holders nationwide.
