The Economic Emergency Employment (EEE) grant is a vital lifeline for many people in Cyprus, especially during challenging economic times. However, current regulations prevent recipients of this grant from working without risking a reduction or loss of their financial support. This regulation is counterproductive and does not allow for an improvement in the quality of life for these individuals.

Currently, EEE recipients are faced with the difficult decision of either accepting the grant and remaining unemployed or seeking employment and losing their much-needed financial assistance. This creates a cycle of dependency and stifles the economic potential of numerous talented individuals who have so much to contribute to society.

It is crucial to amend this policy and allow EEE grant recipients to engage in paid employment while continuing to receive their full grant. By enabling them to work, they can develop their skills, gain valuable work experience, and contribute positively to the Cypriot economy. Moreover, the opportunity to work would improve their mental and emotional well-being and provide them with a sense of purpose.

Numerous studies have shown that employment significantly enhances quality of life, even in small capacities. Countries that have allowed grant recipients to work have seen better outcomes in terms of employment, poverty reduction, and individual satisfaction with their quality of life. For example, in some EU countries, welfare beneficiaries are encouraged to work to enhance their independence and self-sufficiency.

By making this change, Cyprus can become a model for progressive economic policies that balance the need for financial support with opportunities for personal and professional growth. This would not only improve the lives of EEE recipients but also stimulate economic activity and reduce the strain on the welfare system.

We call upon the government of Cyprus to revise the EEE grant regulations urgently. Allow these grant beneficiaries to work without penalty, so they, and their families, can experience a better quality of life. Το Ελάχιστο Εγγυημένο Εισόδημα (ΕΕΕ) αποτελεί κρίσιμη στήριξη για χιλιάδες πολίτες στην Κύπρο. Ωστόσο, οι σημερινοί κανονισμοί τιμωρούν όσους θέλουν να εργαστούν, αφού η παραμικρή αμειβόμενη απασχόληση μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε μείωση ή απώλεια του επιδόματος.

Αυτός ο κανονισμός δημιουργεί έναν φαύλο κύκλο εξάρτησης και στερεί από τους ανθρώπους την ευκαιρία να αναπτύξουν τις δεξιότητές τους, να εργαστούν και να προσφέρουν στην κοινωνία.

Ζητούμε από την Κυπριακή Κυβέρνηση να τροποποιήσει άμεσα την πολιτική του ΕΕΕ, ώστε οι δικαιούχοι να μπορούν:

Να εργάζονται με αξιοπρέπεια χωρίς να χάνουν το επίδομά τους
Να αποκτούν εμπειρία και να ενισχύουν το εισόδημά τους
Να συμβάλλουν ενεργά στην οικονομία και στην κοινωνική ανάπτυξη
Χώρες της ΕΕ που επιτρέπουν την εργασία παράλληλα με την κοινωνική στήριξη έχουν χαμηλότερα ποσοστά φτώχειας και μεγαλύτερη εργασιακή συμμετοχή. Η Κύπρος μπορεί και πρέπει να ακολουθήσει αυτό το παράδειγμα.
