"Federal Judge rules ICE must let religious leaders into Broadview Detention Center for Ash Wednesday!
On Thursday, February 12, a federal judge ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to allow religious leaders into the Broadview Detention Center for Ash Wednesday and to begin working with CSPL to establish an agreement for regular pastoral visits moving forward.
U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman stated that denying Catholic priests and sisters access to detainees violates federal protections for religious freedom.
This order comes in response to our lawsuit against ICE and the Department of Homeland Security after months of denied access to bring pastoral care and Communion to those detained at the Broadview facility. It reflects the steady, strategic, and prayerful efforts of clergy, faith leaders, and CSPL members who have organized public liturgies and processions outside the detention center since October 2025.
