Allow both in person and online DUI classes in Kentucky

Allow both in person and online DUI classes in Kentucky
The Issue
Petition to Allow Online DUI Education in Kentucky
To: Kentucky State Legislature, Governor’s Office, and the Kentucky Department of Transportation
We, the undersigned, urge Kentucky lawmakers to modernize the state’s DUI education program by allowing DUI offenders the option to complete their required education classes online or in person.
Currently, Kentucky remains one of the few states that only offers in-person DUI classes. This outdated requirement places an unnecessary burden on individuals who are already struggling with financial and logistical challenges, including:
Transportation Issues – Many individuals have their licenses suspended, making travel to in-person classes nearly impossible. While alcohol-related DUIs have the option of an ignition interlock device, those convicted of a marijuana-related DUI do not have an equivalent system, leaving them with no legal way to drive.
Financial Hardship – DUI classes are expensive, and requiring in-person attendance forces individuals to take time off work, making it even harder to pay for the required program.
Inconsistency with Other States – Many states allow online DUI education programs, recognizing that they are just as effective while being more accessible. Kentucky should align with these modern standards to ensure fair treatment of first-time offenders.
Our Request
We call on Kentucky lawmakers to pass legislation allowing first-time DUI offenders the choice between online or in-person DUI education programs. This simple change would:
✔️ Make it easier for individuals to comply with court orders.
✔️ Reduce unnecessary barriers to completing required education.
✔️ Help people maintain employment and financial stability.
✔️ Align Kentucky with other states that offer modern, accessible options.
By making this change, Kentucky can create a fairer, more practical system that holds individuals accountable without setting them up for failure.
