Every student deserves an inclusive and equitable lunch experience. Currently, at Severna Park Middle School, students are separated into different lunch periods, which hinders social interaction and development, an essential aspect of a holistic education. Schools should not just focus on academic growth, but also emphasize the importance of building friendships and fostering a strong community spirit among students.

The policy of separating students merely based on logistical convenience is not in line with the educational mission of encouraging collaboration and understanding among peers. The primary objective of Severna Park Middle School should be to nurture an environment where all students can enjoy their lunch breaks together. Although there might be a few individuals who occasionally disrupt, these instances should be handled specifically rather than penalizing the entire student body. This current arrangement is unjust and contributes to social fragmentation and unnecessary anxiety among students. 

Research indicates that communal lunches foster better peer relationships, reduce instances of bullying, and improve overall student well-being. Furthermore, experts suggest that eating together as a community can improve academic performance, as students feel more relaxed and supported by their peers.

We propose a revision of the current lunch schedule to accommodate all students, allowing them the opportunity to eat together. Perhaps, rotating troublemakers into supervised groups while still allowing them to participate in community lunches could be a viable solution. Additionally, increasing faculty supervision during lunch can mitigate any potential issues.
