Allow Aestheticians & Nurses in Indiana to Perform Microneedling, Lash and Brow Services

Allow Aestheticians & Nurses in Indiana to Perform Microneedling, Lash and Brow Services
The Issue
As a licensed aesthetician and small business owner in Indiana, I've dedicated my career to helping people heal and restore confidence through corrective skincare. Over the years, I've invested tens of thousands of dollars in advanced training with direct companies, microneedling certifications, FDA regulated devices, and education on treating diverse skin types—especially deeper Fitzpatrick tones that are often overlooked in the industry. Despite having the education, clinical knowledge, and medical supervision in place, I'm not legally permitted to perform microneedling in my own state. Despite following all the rules from day one. This restriction not only limits what I can offer my clients but also forces them to seek treatment elsewhere or from unqualified providers who may not operate under proper oversight. I work with clients struggling with acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and texture concerns—issues that microneedling can safely and effectively address. It's disheartening to know that I have the training and resources to help, yet my hands are tied by outdated regulations. All I'm asking is for the state of Indiana to recognize that licensed aestheticians, when properly trained and supervised by a medical director, are more than capable of performing these treatments safely. We're not asking to replace medical professionals—we're asking to work with them, ethically and responsibly, to provide better care for our communities. For many of us, this isn't just about business—it's about our passion for skin health, access to safe treatment options for all people, and the future of the aesthetics industry in Indiana. The current regulations in Indiana restrict us from performing microneedling, despite our extensive advanced education and commitment to client safety. However, in many other states, aestheticians are allowed to safely conduct microneedling under the supervision of a medical director and with FDA-regulated devices. These companies take their trainings and continued education seriously. These professionals follow the same stringent infection-control standards and protocol compliance as we do in Indiana. Microneedling is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure that enhances skin texture, tone, and tackles scarring effectively. Our training, anatomical understanding, and hands-on experience equip us with the ability to execute these treatments responsibly, especially when under medical oversight. Updating the scope of practice in Indiana to allow these treatments would support small businesses, empower medspas, and benefit estheticians by facilitating growth within regulated, safe environments. Additionally, this change would improve access to corrective skincare and professional treatment options for all skin tones, especially those in underserved communities. Aligning Indiana's regulations with national standards ensures fair competition and standardized consumer protections. We respectfully urge Indiana’s licensing boards and legislators to recognize the professionalism and skill of today's licensed estheticians. Our goal is simple: to provide our clients with the safety, ethics, and effectiveness they deserve in skincare treatments while upholding Indiana's high standards for care. Please join us in updating these regulations to empower aestheticians and strengthen Indiana’s beauty and wellness industry. Sign this petition to bring about the change needed for aestheticians to perform microneedling under medical supervision using FDA-regulated devices.
Recently, there have also been discussions that would further restrict both estheticians and medical professionals, including Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs), from performing certain procedures such as Radiofrequency Microneedling (RF), brow tinting, lash lifts, and brow laminations. These services are staples in modern aesthetics, performed safely across the country with appropriate training and infection control. Limiting or removing the ability for licensed professionals to perform these treatments not only threatens small business growth but also pushes clients toward unregulated or unsafe environments. Indiana’s professionals deserve the opportunity to continue offering these services safely, ethically, and within their trained scope under the appropriate supervision, professional licensing and advanced education.
