Allocate land for a new cricket ground in East Renfrewshire for a local cricket club
The Issue
Mearns Cricket Club is an amateur cricket club based in East Renfrewshire and looking for a local dedicated cricket ground to play its juniors and seniors matches.
The cricket club took its roots in Broom Park (Newton Mearns) and since then has grown from strength to strength and now plays three juniors teams, three senior Men teams and One women & Girls teams in Cricket Scotland Western Division (WDCU) and doing really well. The club has more than 100 senior men, women and juniors (women & girls) players and aspires to play cricket at highest level in Scotland and promote cricket in local community & schools. Apart from playing league cricket the club hosts various programmes for promoting cricket including family fun day (with over 150 participants), ICC Cricket Coaching sessions, weekly training for young/junior players, and cricket for over 40/50s age group.
Inspite of this staggering growth and positive impact in community, the club has struggled to find a local ground in East Renfrewshire where it can play its home matches and our juniors and seniors have to travel to various other council grounds (Glasgow & South Lanarkshire) where juniors and seniors have to travel long distance and also end up playing on sub-standard hired grounds which lack cricket facilities thus limit them from playing at higher level and ability to excel at cricket.
We request East Renfrewshire Council to either allocate a piece of land fit for purpose or allow us to use one of existing sports grounds which is not being fully utilized right now and club will invest in it to convert it into a good quality cricket ground. Cricket is growing sport in East Renfrewshire and primary sport played by huge number of residents in area and deserves a dedicated cricket ground which can cater to growing community.
