A public hearing concerning the proposed legislation to create an Independent Police Review Board for Allegheny County is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28, 2021. The public hearing is slated for 5pm within the Allegheny County Council chambers. Due to the impact of COVID-19, many people are encouraged to participate via live-stream.
Ironically, members of Allegheny County Council may have already voted on the legislation by the time the public hearing is actually convened. A regular council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 27th, 2021 and many believe the bill will be voted on that day. Although this bill is certainly not what the Committee for a Civilian-Police Review Board had envisioned nor presented during our numerous community meetings and presentations to Allegheny County Council, it is a beginning. We still have a lot of work to do in order to develop a comprehensive bill AND board that has jurisdiction over all of the over 100 police departments of Allegheny County with not just subpoena power, but budgetary, personnel and prosecutorial powers and oversight as well. Police must be controlled by the community. Anyone who wishes to comment to Allegheny County Council should submit a request to comment online at the following:Request to comment
