The article “Huntington Targets Changes to Deer Hunting Laws” (see link below) appeared in The Huntington Times on August 24, 2017, in response to the Town of Huntington scheduling a public hearing on September 19 on their proposed changes affecting the use of longbows during the 2017-2018 hunting season. The Town Board claims these changes will make the deer hunting season “safer for our residents.” However, the hunters all know that the town is feeding the public nonsense to make it seem like they are doing something. Why has the Town Board taken the offensive when they know that only the DEC can regulate hunting? In essence, the town is actually violating the rights of residents to have hunters on their property by claiming to enforce guidelines that cannot be enforced. There is no reason to hold a public hearing, and the Town of Huntington has actually done nothing new to assure the safety of its residents since the setback laws were enacted in October 2015. Here are some of the comments from the hunters: (These comments were all printed publicly on the Hunters for Deer Facebook page in reference to the TOH public hearing scheduled for September 19, 2017). Their comments show that although the Town can suggest guidelines, it hasn’t got the teeth to enforce them. Only the DEC can do that. Hunter #1: Last year, you also needed to notify the police & town you were hunting. Why does everybody think this is new? 1 · August 26 at 9:17pm Hunters For Deer, Inc.: No you didn't. One question, who's going to enforce it? August 26 at 9:29pm Hunter #1:Section 109-3 of the town code. It was in there last year.& sent to me when I inquired about hunting. 1 · August 26 at 9:56pm Hunters For Deer, Inc.: (response to Hunter #1): interesting. 190-3F1 &2. Looks like the town has it in their Ecode so then why are they voting on it after the public comment on 09/19/17?? Do you hunt? Hunter #2: That's funny!...I didn't contact any one. It's also not a regulation, law of any kind. Those who allow hunters on THEIR PROPERTY are not required to follow any other guidelines. Except those specifically set forth by Environmental Conservation Law or ECL. August 26 at 9:56pm Hunter #1:My biggest concern is they are trying to change the definition of "dwelling". The current definition of dwelling is a house. They are trying to change that to include barns, out houses, detached garages, etc, etc. August 26 at 10:29pm Michael Tessitore of Hunters for Deer, Inc.: They can't refine or add restrictions. NYSDEC can pre-empt the field. Huntington will lose this fight in court on the first summons they issue. August 26 at 10:35pm Hunter #1: I have a better argument for you guys, but I need to know who's the big shot lawyer of the group? All I have seen so far is misinformation. The town doesn't even know the definition of a long bow. Page responded privately · August 26 at 10:44pm
