Oppose the NLCCC Proposal to Close North Lawndale Schools

The Issue

The schools in North Lawndale are a pillar of our communities. We recognize that our children are our future and believe in protecting their access to education within our community, by our community members. CPS and the NLCCC (North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council) have banded together to propose consolidating and closing three schools within our community: Lawndale Community Academy, Crown Community Academy, and Charles Sumner Math & Science Community Academy in favor of a new STEAM school. Community members, parents, and teachers do not agree with closing these schools and seek to OPPOSE the proposal by the NLCCC.

School closings in Chicago have disproportionately affected minority students and have created barriers to quality education. In Chicago, we have seen how school consolidations and closings have played out and the effect they have on our communities. These closings destabilize our communities, displace our experienced teachers and administrators, and interfere with our students' education. We ask Chicago leaders Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Alderman Michael Scott, and Chicago Public School Board Members to listen to the community, invest in our current schools and OPPOSE the proposal to close and consolidate our schools.

CPS will vote on the proposal on November 18. We must make our voices heard and let our leaders know to invest, not close, and consolidate. Spread the word!
