This petition has been created as a call for the immediate removal of the Don Juan de Oñate statue located outside of the Albuquerque Museum located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We stand firm in our belief that Oñate and the statue created in his image represents and continues a legacy of colonial violence. The impact of the murderous acts committed by Oñate on Native American Pueblo peoples is one that echos throughout history in the form of lingering trauma that is still felt across various Native peoples today. We believe that removing this statue is a step towards acknowledging and addressing the atrocities committed against the Pueblo people and further, is a movement towards creating and fostering a dialogue of healing and unity as we move to combat the impacts of colonialism.
