Hi everybody! It's been a long time. We now have just under 40,000 registered signatures! This is excellent news, as when this petition was started, it was done with the hope of attaining 10,000 signatures. As of right now, we have almost 4 times the original goal. Unfortunately, even with this overwhelming support, the Alberta Government is still moving ahead with its plans to rip up our mountains for coal. An Australian coal company called Riversdale Resources Limited has recently revealed plans to create an open-pit mine north of Blairmore, a town in the south-west portion of Alberta in the mountains.

HOWEVER, the good news is that we have a chance stop this! Many mining projects have been defeated when locals near a planned open-pit mine project have protested. Examples include the suspension of the “Famatina Project” in Argentina and the decade-long stalling and de facto cancellation of the planned Phulbari open-pit mine in Bangladesh. Since the project has (thankfully) not begun yet, we can freeze it in its tracks before the company begins operations.

How do we do this? We simply have to spam Riversdale Resources Limited with e-mails saying we don’t want any open-pit mines anywhere near our Rocky Mountains. Some of us have already sent e-mails to the company, making it plain we are against the project. If more of us criticize the planned mine, we can convince the company that they’ll face so much resistance to the project that there is no guarantee the mine will ever be built. This would force them to cancel the project entirely for a lack of guaranteed profit.

If you want, you can send your own personalized e-mail to the company. Their e-mail address is Riv.Community@rivresources.com. However, we have prepared a standard e-mail stating our views. All it needs is to be signed and sent by your own e-mail address. A link to the e-mail can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mT_8FaUhAoyABX4JHnX46UyhD0_A7ncO3RBANA4DCdc/edit?usp=sharing

If enough of us make our voices heard, no new open-pit mines will ever touch our Rocky Mountains. What will take 5 minutes to copy, paste, and send might ensure a protected environment for years to come.

With hope,

Concerned Citizens of Alberta's Administrator

P.S. If you can keep sharing the petition, do so! The more signatures the better!
