We have finally received a response to our petition from Alan Latourelle, CEO of Parks Canada. None of the other elected officials or Park officials that we targeted have responded and I am doubtful that they will. In summary, Alan Latourelle’s response is that we should be pleased that the Park has let volunteers affiliated with the Waskesiu Chamber of Commerce to use Park equipment to groom the trails. I would characterize his response as a half-victory. As a result of our pressure, there are now approximately 50 km of trails groomed (for classic skiing only) in the Park. However, since this solution relies on volunteers, its long-term viability is unclear and the quality and frequency of the grooming remains to be seen. The number of trails to be groomed is only about half of what was groomed in the past and the visitor centre will remain closed for winter months.
