Alameda County: Regulate the Rodeo!

The Issue

Alameda County is considering banning two rodeo practices. Let's encourage them to show leadership in standing up against animal abuse!

THE EVENTS

The Alameda County Veterinary Medical Association has expressed opposition to the four following rodeo practices:

*Mutton busting* is an event in which young children (ages four – seven years) ride on the backs of sheep in an event some- what akin to the rodeo bucking bronco event. It's dangerous for children and sheep alike, and teaches kids that scaring animals for entertainment is acceptable. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm_FTC_Za98

*Wild cow milking* is an event in which two or three participants (not professional cowboys) attempt to rope and forcibly restrain a lactating beef cow in order to capture some milk into a bottle. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9lsChy_2AQ

*Goat tying* is an event in which goats are roped and thrown to the ground in less than 10 seconds. Alameda County already bans roping and tripping for all bovines (cows, etc.) and equines (horses etc.). Why is this allowed for goats? Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHhD-OgHO9M

*Using cattle prods on horses* is a cause of undue pain. The Veterinary Association writes that "there are many more humane and sophisticated means of gaining cooperation from animals in general, and in particular, from horses", and that "[t]he manufacturer has stated that the cattle prod is not for use on horses".
