The Issue

Camden Council Healthy School Streets Consultation – St Margaret’s School and St Luke’s CoE School

We, the undersigned, note the proposal by Camden Council to introduce a timed motor vehicle restriction during term time on Kidderpore Avenue, Ferncroft Avenue and Kidderpore Gardens NW3 (the “KFK Area”).

While we are supportive of other measures to reduce the speed of vehicles in this area, we strongly object to the introduction of a motor vehicle restriction (i.e road closures) on the grounds that:

(a)   it will create traffic displacement that ought to be modelled first. Unbearable traffic, noise and air pollution is expected for the roads immediately outside of the restriction;

(b)    it will prevent needed access at critical times for residents within the restriction;

(c)     it will prevent residents with disabilities and needs of various protected types (e.g. pregnant women) from moving around properly during the restriction;

(d)    it will lead to extensive additional signage that is considered harmful to the conservation area.

(e)      the motor vehicle restriction is not supported by at least one of the schools that it has been introduced to supposedly benefit; and

(f)    such a restriction is not needed to achieve the goal of slower-moving traffic which can be achieved by less punitive measures.

We sign this petition to politely call on Camden Council not to introduce a timed motor vehicle restriction as part of any Healthy School street measure affecting the KFK Area.
