In solidarity with the people of Tibet, we urgently call on the Australian Government and Australian lawmakers to take meaningful action in support of the Tibetan people and their fundamental rights.

For generations, Tibetans have endured policies of political repression, propaganda and forced assimilation that threaten their language, religion, culture and national identity. Since 1951, Tibetan communities have faced growing restrictions on cultural and religious expression, while Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and institutions have been subjected to extensive state control.

The recently implemented Ethnic Unity Law, presented as a measure to promote national unity and integration, has raised serious concerns about the further marginalisation of Tibetans and the erosion of their distinct cultural identity. Tibetan children have increasingly been placed in state-run boarding schools where Mandarin is prioritised over Tibetan, separating children from their families and weakening their connection to their language, culture and religious traditions. Tibetan people face growing pressure to abandon their language, culture and spiritual heritage or face deathly penalities.

These concerns extend beyond cultural change. When a people’s language, religion, traditions and connection to their heritage are systematically restricted, their ability to preserve their identity is placed at risk. Human rights organisations and international observers have raised serious concerns about the treatment of Tibetans and the potential long-term destruction of their cultural and religious identity.

The world must no longer stand by. Australia has a proud history of supporting democracy, human rights, freedom and human dignity. We urgently call upon the Australian Government to stand in solidarity with the people of Tibet and to use its diplomatic and legislative influence to advocate for their rights.

We call on Australian lawmakers to:

1. Stand in solidarity with the Tibetan people and publicly recognise credible, documented human rights concerns affecting Tibetans.
2. Support the Tibetan people's right to self-determination and meaningful dialogue concerning Tibet's political future.
3. Advocate for independent international access to Tibet for United Nations human rights mechanisms and observers.
4. Protect Tibetan language, culture and religious freedom, including the rights of Tibetan communities and refugees in Australia to preserve their heritage.
5. Consider targeted sanctions against individuals credibly responsible for serious human rights violations, consistent with Australian law and international standards.
6. Engage in multilateral efforts with international partners to promote dialogue, transparency and accountability.

Australia should lead by example. By taking a stronger position on Tibet, Australia can help amplify the voices of Tibetans whose concerns are too often silenced and demonstrate that human rights cannot depend on political power.

Supporting Tibet is not simply about one nation or one community. It is about defending the universal principles of freedom, justice, cultural preservation, religious freedom and human dignity.

We urgently call on the Australian Government: do not remain silent. Stand with the people of Tibet.
