In less than a week, 230 people signed the petition urging the NJ state house to pass this unprecedent bill. My goal is to get 1K signatures by July 31!

NJ could lead the way in animal welfare by protecting and controlling its free roaming cat population. Right now, NJ has no laws on the books to protect community cats - only a recommendation from the health department urging everyone to spay and neuter their cats, and explaining the process of trap neuter return. There are subsidized spay neuter appointments for those receiving public assistance but limited resources for spaying and neutering community cats (stray/feral cats living outside.) The average cost now to spay/neuter just one community cat in NJ is around $60. 

 Every cat you see outside is a failure on the part of someone who didn't fix their indoor cat. But we can change this together. Trap-neuter-release (TNR) is the most effective, most humane way of controlling the outdoor cat population when it's done in a high volume, targeted manner. It takes a lot of work and a lot of MONEY.

Right now, all across this state, individual volunteers and non-profit organizations are working tirelessly trapping and fixing community cats. Their jobs are that much harder during kitten season. We simply don't have enough rescues and fosters to take all the kittens. 75% of kittens born outside won't survive past six months of age. Furthermore, in some cases, volunteers are even doing the job of animal control, trapping injured and sick cats for medical care. This is totally unacceptable and unsustainable.

 Without a robust public program to fund spay neuter, our animal shelter system will continue to be overburdened, and rescues will be full. Cats will continue to suffer and die outside - hit by cars, poisoned, or from illness or injury. I know there is a way out of this crisis. High volume, high quality, low cost spay neuter is the only way forward.
