Advocate for stronger policies against gender-based violence in Nigeria
The Issue
While growing up, I witnessed a distressing amount of abuse against women, including those in my family and neighborhood. Many of these women endured unspeakable violence yet couldn't find their voices, paralysed by fear and the lack of supportive structures around them. Even more disheartening was the inaction of institutions designed to protect them: time and again, their cries for help were dismissed. This issue hit home when a dear neighbor of mine almost lost her life due to her husband's continuous abuse. When the matter was reported to the police, they responded with ludicrous justifications, claiming he was merely "correcting" her behavior.
This indifference from supposed protectors of justice is utterly unacceptable. Gender-based violence, a persistent global crisis affecting one in three women worldwide, demands our immediate action. Women across the globe suffer from systematic abuse simply because of their gender, and this is exacerbated by lenient policies and inadequate legal frameworks that fail to safeguard their rights and dignity. Being a woman should not be a limitation, every woman deserves the right to live in peace, free from violence so more efforts should be made to make this happen.
It's time for us to stand united and demand change. We must advocate for the creation and implementation of stronger policies designed to protect women against gender-based violence. This should include comprehensive support systems that empower victims to speak up without fear of retribution. Additionally, we need to enforce harsher punishments for offenders, ensuring they face real consequences that reflect the gravity of their crimes. These changes are necessary not just for justice but for the empowerment of women everywhere.
Consider this: every day, countless women face violence in their own homes, workplaces, and communities. Many are silenced by fears of not being believed or by the prospect of institutional failure. According to the World Health Organization, globally, around 35% of women have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. Many have lost their lives as a result of this menace and the figures keep rising. These numbers are not just statistics; they represent real women whose lives are being jeopardized.
We must hold our authorities accountable for upholding women's rights and ensure that gender equality is not just an ideal but a reality. By supporting policies that protect women and punish offenders, we can pave the way for a safer environment where women can thrive without fear.
Let's unite and raise our voices against gender-based violence. Sign this petition to urge policymakers to act promptly and decisively. Together, we can create a world where every woman feels protected and valued. Your signature can make a difference, encouraging comprehensive changes that save lives.
