Advocate for Reasonable Phone Access in Schools

Advocate for Reasonable Phone Access in Schools
The Issue
I deeply understand the significance of mobile phones in today's education environment, as I have witnessed their impact firsthand. My sister, who has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), and a close friend with diabetes under a 504 plan, utilize their phones regularly; be it in classrooms or throughout their day. Mobile devices serve as crucial educational tools for them.
However, with the current laws limiting phone access in schools, both my sister and my close friend are unjustifiably penalized. The approach of escalating these incidents to legal action can potentially tarnish a child's record for an extended period, jeopardizing their future prospects, including higher education opportunities.
While we all understand that cellphones can potentially be sources of distraction, it should ultimately be up to the educators to manage this aspect within their classrooms. Establishing blanket laws that may detrimentally affect students, who leverage technology for health and educational purposes, is not the solution.
Affirming this, a study from England's University of Nottingham shows improved digital skills and increased participation when phones are allowed in class (University of Nottingham, 2015). Additionally, the American Diabetes Association has highlighted the importance of mobile devices in the management of diabetes for children, proving their necessity (American Diabetes Association, 2020).
Therefore, we need to reconsider and amend the current laws governing phone usage in schools. This crucial change will ensure a more inclusive learning environment for all students while respecting the onus of classroom management that lies with the teachers. Please sign this petition to support reasonable phone use in schools.
