Growing up in a low-income family in Syracuse, NY meant that accessing fresh and high-quality fruits and vegetables was an impossible task. Like many families, we had to rely on grocery stores for our produce. Yet being low-income, we were often unable to afford the best quality. With obesity rates soaring across the US, it's time we rethink how we source our food - not just for ourselves but also for our children and grandchildren.

We are calling on Mayor Ben Walsh and Governor Kathy Hochul to bring local farming initiatives to Syracuse. We believe that by allowing citizens to start backyard gardens and fresh food stands, not only will it provide a source of income but also access to fresher foods.

According to the USDA Economic Research Service (ERS), urban agriculture can provide numerous benefits including increased access to food, improved nutrition education, job creation among others. Furthermore, studies show that locally grown produce tends to be fresher as they're sold directly after harvest which can lead towards better nutritional value (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition).

In addition, any surplus from these local farms could be donated towards homeless shelters – providing healthier meals for those who need them most.
