Advocate for Bike Strategy & Accessibility Plan for City of Mitcham 2023 Budget

Advocate for Bike Strategy & Accessibility Plan for City of Mitcham 2023 Budget
The issue
On 23rd May, Mitcham Council will make decisions on once-off project proposals as part of their 2023 budget. Cr Tom Morrison has lodged a $65,000 proposal for a one-off Bike Strategy and Accessibility Plan. Several other Councillors support funding this, but 7 out of 12 votes are need to secure funding for this proposal.
The City of Mitcham offers some of the best cycling opportunities in the state however, council does not currently have any strategic plan for cycling that brings together all the different cycling cohorts to asses safety, needs, risks, opportunities for development, and project improvement.
Cyclists know there is currently a disconnected and underdeveloped cycling infrastructure throughout the City of Mitcham. Commuter bike lanes & paths that end without warning, narrow and windy major commuter roads don’t have cycling lanes, as well as unsafe and neglected trails. All of which pose a danger to existing cyclists, deter potential new cyclists and cause frustration for other road users. Whether for recreation, commuting, mountain biking, BMX or fitness, riding a bike in the City of Mitcham should be safe, fun, and accessible.
Signing this petition for Council to fund a Bike Strategy & Accessibility Plan will show that there IS widespread demand from cyclists in Mitcham Council for a better bike strategy and infrastructure. 7 out of 12 votes are need to secure the $65,000 in funding for this proposal. Furthermore, council needs to know what type of cycling you undertake. To have your voices heard by Council you MUST add your SUBURB under the “City” field and in the optional I’m signing because… box , please add what TYPE of bike riding you do and any feedback, projects or cycling issues you would like the Council to consider when developing the plan.
If funded, Council will engage a consultant to ASSESS past strategic documents relating to cycling (of all forms). Consult with the different biking cohorts and then write a proposed new strategic plan. That strategic plan will likely include recommendations for funding future projects with $$$ small and large in future State and Federal grant rounds and pre-election promises.
Now is our chance to be heard. Thank you for taking time to support this important first step!
