UPDATE: Last week, advocates from The Gray Matters Collective were invited to meet with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to discuss suicide prevention measures on the I-74 Bridge. We are grateful for the invitation and for the opportunity to share our community’s voices through the petition.
The conversation was thoughtful, honest, and productive. We discussed what is possible, what presents challenges, and what meaningful prevention can look like on this bridge. Implementing suicide prevention measures takes time to do effectively and safely, and we appreciate that this process must be handled with care. I’m encouraged by the dialogue and feel confident that action will be taken.
As details continue to take shape, we will share updates as we are able. Thank you to our community for continuing to show up, speak up, and advocate in the meantime. And thank you again to the Iowa DOT for their willingness to listen and engage. More to come soon.
In the meantime, please keep sharing our petition to keep the movement alive. There is still much to do! We have plans to meet with Illinois DOT as well to discuss measures on the Centennial Bridge. I will keep everyone updated as this unfolds. Thank you for your support!
