Advancing Menstrual Equity in Ontario

The Issue

WHEREAS despite efforts by the Ministry of Education in Ontario, including the province’s menstrual pilot project, students continue to face inadequate access to quality menstrual products and comprehensive education;

WHEREAS there is no requirement for teachers to receive training or adequate resources on how to engage in menstrual health conversations;

WHEREAS products, such as tampons, are often distributed absent of proper instruction on safe usage, posing serious health risks including Toxic Shock Syndrome;

WHEREAS teachers and school staff frequently take it upon themselves to purchase and store menstrual supplies in their classrooms;

WHEREAS menstrual education should promote environmentally friendly and sustainable menstrual options;

THEREFORE WE THE UNDERSIGNED petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to: Direct the Ministry of Education to conduct a comprehensive review of the current menstrual product pilot project, in collaboration with school boards, student advocacy groups, and menstrual health organizations such as Auntie, PERIOD Ontario and Moon Time Connections; Update the provincial curriculum to ensure consistent and supportive menstruation education starting in Grade 5, as well as training and tools for educators to adequately lead discussions about menstrual health; and, begin phasing out the current pilot project in favour of environmentally friendly menstrual support.
