Adopt the WI Star Flag as Wisconsin’s New State Flag

The Issue

Designed by middle school student, flag enthusiast, and International Academic Competitions National Geography Quarterfinalist Micah Sayner, the exciting new WI Star Flag captures the essence of Wisconsin! Each element of this flag holds significant meaning: Blue stands for our vibrant lakes and rivers; green stands for our majestic North Woods and nature; yellow stands for our strong agriculture and bright cities. Additionally, the 5-point star represents Wisconsin’s five regions: Northern, Northeast, Southeast, South Central, and West Central. Finally, its right-pointing triangles capture a sense of momentum, perfectly aligning with the state's motto, "Forward."

Who is impacted?

Wisconsinites today are represented by a flag that was designed over 160 years ago, in a time when many states adopted similar, indistinct symbols—blue backgrounds with their state seal. This design choice doesn’t offer Wisconsin a unique identity, especially when compared to more modern state flags. For the people of Wisconsin, a flag should be more than a generic symbol; it should reflect the state’s individuality and inspire a sense of pride. The current flag fails to stand out and resonate with Wisconsinites, blending in with dozens of other state flags that share the same outdated format.

Flag design experts believe that the most effective flags are simple, easy to recognize, and can be replicated by anyone—whether drawn by a child or seen from a distance. Wisconsin’s current flag, cluttered with small details like the state seal and text, doesn’t meet these standards of good design. Without a distinctive, easily recognizable flag, Wisconsin is missing an opportunity to give its residents a symbol they can truly rally behind, one that represents both their home and their connection to it.

What is at stake?

If Wisconsin continues to use the current flag, it will remain a generic symbol that fails to stand out and embody the essence of the state and its people. Adopting the WI Star Flag would give Wisconsin a bold, modern symbol that highlights our lakes, forests, farms, cities, and five unique regions. This new flag will give residents a distinct, recognizable symbol that represents both the land and the people of Wisconsin, serving as a unifying symbol that connects every corner of our great state.

Failing to act now means missing the opportunity to join the growing number of states embracing flag designs that truly stand out. While Minnesota, a neighboring state, has recently updated its flag, states like Utah and New Mexico have also adopted simple, powerful designs that evoke pride in fresh and meaningful ways. If we don’t take steps to evolve, Wisconsin risks being left behind in this wave of change, sticking with an outdated flag that no longer resonates with its people. By adopting the WI Star Flag, we have the opportunity to join this movement and promote a symbol that all Wisconsinites can be proud of for generations to come.

Why is now the time to act?

As states across the nation embrace the power of their flags to reflect the spirit of their communities, now is the ideal moment for Wisconsin to join this transformative movement. In 2024, Utah and Minnesota officially adopted new flags with bold designs that resonate deeply with their citizens. Additionally, Illinois and Massachusetts are actively considering updating their flags, signaling a collective recognition that state symbols should evolve to recognize and energize their citizens.

Wisconsin’s motto, “Forward,” speaks to the need for thoughtful change when it serves the greater good. By supporting the WI Star Flag, we can capture the attention of state legislators and initiate the journey toward adopting a new, vibrant symbol that represents and celebrates Wisconsin in a fresh, sleek, and exciting way. With more visibility, a modern flag design could also create new opportunities for merchandising and tourism, giving Wisconsin an added boost in recognition across the country.

The time is right to stay ahead of the curve and ensure Wisconsin is not left behind as other states embrace meaningful flag designs that stand out on the national stage. Let’s guarantee Wisconsin stands proudly at the forefront of this movement, adopting a new flag that celebrates both the land and the people all across our beautiful state. In doing so, we will bring the WI Star Flag to not only represent today’s Wisconsin, but also be honored by generations to come.
