Adopt a New Flag for Memphis

“New Designed Flag” by: Nakil Amali Woods

In 2025, with the challenges we are facing, it's crucial to put things into perspective and guide Memphis in the right direction. It often feels like 'Memphis vs Everybody,' but we must acknowledge that we have attracted some of this negative attention. Self-awareness and accountability are our starting points in steering this city's ship.

Our city is brimming with potential. We are not a lost cause. We are not victims nor a charity case; we are MEMPHIS. With a history of resilience and pride, it's time for our flag to reflect our true colors and our essence. The current flag does not capture the soul and spirit of Memphis as it stands today.

I've designed a new flag that pays homage to our heritage, importance, and the pride we hold dear. It embodies the vibrant culture, diversity, and strength that characterize Memphis. This flag isn't just a symbol; it's a testament to our city's determination to thrive despite adversity.

  • White Star:  Gleams against a navy blue background, symbolizing Memphis as the radiant jewel of West Tennessee, inspired by the three stars of the state flag. We have always been a stand out as a city in the state.
  • Navy Blue Field:  Represents the city's iconic teams, including the Grizzlies, Memphis Tigers, and its deep cultural heritage. The blue in the sky also represents the reflection of our beautiful waters over our city.
  • Yellow-Gold Stripe: Radiates like the sun, signifying Memphis as the "golden" hub of distribution, blues/jazz music, and home to the nation's best natural waters.
  • Gray Stripe:  Reflects the city's industrial strength, our labor force in the industrial industry, and our acceptance of any and all kinds with the like mindedness of our great city.
  • Pyramid with Apex:  Channels the architectural vision of mirroring the Egyptian city of Memphis, with a design nod to ancient pyramids. Added that we have a replica of our own pyramid in downtown Memphis.
  • Red, White, and Blue Stripes: Converge toward the pyramid, symbolizing unity, freedom, and Memphis's connection to American values and its Nile Delta-inspired roots.

The legacy of Memphis is rich and profound, and our flag should encapsulate that. A symbol as significant as a city flag must evolve and represent the dynamic community it serves. Let's embrace this change and redefine our identity with a flag that truly represents us.

Join me in urging the Memphis City Council to consider this new design that embodies all of us. Sign the petition to initiate this symbolic yet impactful change.
