Address the recruitment and retention crisis of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario by harmonizing wages and addressing pay inequity.
The Issue
Every Ontarian is entitled to access high quality health care in their own community. NPs provide this essential service. At the moment one in five community NP positions is vacant, because NPs are taking jobs in other settings such as hospitals, long term care and Community care access centers where the compensation rate is much higher. Community NPs have had their wages frozen since 2006. We already know that the best health care systems in the world are built on a foundation of strong primary care. At a time when the government is promoting ‘care close to home’, our primary care sector has become a revolving door! Ontarians can't get access to community care and are being forced to use the emergency department for needs that are better looked after in the community.
