When I was a small child, I witnessed conversations in my family that shook me to my core. These discussions revolved around arranging marriages for the sole purpose of obtaining a Green Card in Michigan, using daughters as pawns. This practice is not only unethical but distinctly illegal, viewed as a serious federal crime under U.S. immigration laws. Such actions constitute marriage fraud, attracting dire consequences for all parties, including U.S. citizens.

Marriage is a sacred bond meant to be founded on love and commitment, not deceit and exploitation. When people engage in sham marriages solely to manipulate immigration laws, it undermines the sanctity of marriage and threatens the integrity of our legal system. It’s essential for the U.S. immigration authorities and federal law enforcement to take such offenses seriously, ensuring strict monitoring and enforcement of existing laws.

I am formally petitioning for Patricia M. Perrin to be involved in reviewing such cases in Michigan, examining the cost implications, and overseeing lie detector tests if necessary. Employing lie detectors could be pivotal in these cases, as they serve as a vital tool for gauging truthfulness and have proven effective in uncovering deceit in serious investigations. By doing so, we stand a greater chance of protecting innocent individuals from being manipulated into fraudulent marriages.

But legal repercussions aren’t enough. We need education. We must empower young women with knowledge about their rights and offer safe spaces where they can voice concerns without fear of retaliation. Schools, community centers, and religious organizations should collaborate to provide informative workshops and support groups focusing on the importance of informed and consensual marriages.

This issue is highly personal but representative of a broader concern that affects many others, putting them in harmful situations. We must act now! Let us come together to combat marriage fraud and safeguard the rights and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals.
