The Issue

The recent election processes within the Thessalon First Nation have raised significant concerns regarding adherence to the established Election Code, particularly affecting its fairness, transparency, and integrity. A critical issue is the failure to conduct a by-election, necessary to fill existing vacancies on the Council. According to the Election Code, by-elections must be held when vacancies occur to ensure proper governance. When no by-election took place within the prescribed timelines, it resulted in the current number of sitting councillors falling below the minimum requirement for a quorum.

This lack of quorum not only violates the provisions of the Election Code but also severely impairs governance. The Council's inability to meet quorum has hampered its ability to make decisions and effectively manage the affairs of the Thessalon First Nation. Governance functions are essentially stalled due to this administrative oversight, potentially affecting everything from community policies to essential services.

Ensuring adherence to the Election Code is vital to maintain trust and accountability within the community. Without a functioning Council that meets the basic governance standards, critical decisions regarding community resources, development, and welfare are jeopardized.

This petition calls for immediate corrective actions. We urge the authorities responsible for overseeing the electoral process to initiate the overdue by-election promptly. It is crucial to restore full functionality to the Council and uphold the democratic processes that protect the rights and voices of the Thessalon First Nation members.

Sign this petition to demand that the Thessalon First Nation administration take immediate action to rectify these breaches of the Election Code and restore the integrity of our governing bodies.
